New Bedford Oceanarium
New Bedford, Massachusetts

CSP, with IDEA, proposed a public aquarium, together with a hotel, retail, a large format theater and a ferry terminal, to revitalize the New Bedford waterfront.  Located within an abandoned power plant, the Oceanarium’s proposed first phase converts a former wide span turbine room into a cluster of large marine tanks, free standing curved and bonded acrylic walls. The tanks contain dramatic presentations of varied ocean habitats of the North Atlantic. The visitor experience is one of immersion as if under the sea among giant jewel tanks in the depths, with minimal daylight filtering down from the surface of the sea above, through rebuilt existing skylights. Life support systems are located primarily above the tanks in full view of the public, so that the power plant becomes a new “machine”, in a new era, utilized for the presentation of marine life.  A second half of the power plant, minimally remodeled and reserved for interior expansion, allows this industrial landmark to become an asset for the evolution of a world class ocean learning center.
