The
New England Aquarium is located in Boston Harbor at the center of the city’s
downtown waterfront. CSP principal
Peter Chermayeff directed site planning, architecture, exhibit design,
graphic design and interior design, and the coordination of all engineers and
other design consultants, for the original building as well as for several
expansion projects including an auditorium with enlarged lobby, an entrance
plaza with fountain, and a giant kinetic wind sculpture. The project was
widely recognized as a pioneering project when it opened in 1969, initiating
a new era of urban public aquariums that combined environmental education and
entertainment. Acting as the catalyst
of waterfront redevelopment, the New England Aquarium became an engine of
urban economic and cultural change.
The Aquarium attracts over 1,300,000 visitors per year. To
