The Government of Portugal
retained IDEA and Engil, a general contractor, to design, build and start up the
technical operations of a new Aquarium known as the Oceans Pavilion during
Expo ‘98 and as Oceanário de Lisboa thereafter. The principals of Chermayeff,
Sollogub & Poole were responsible for site planning, programming,
architecture, exhibit design, and the orchestration of all design
disciplines. The Aquarium was the centerpiece of the ’98 Expo, and celebrates
the world’s oceans, selected marine habitats, and a wide diversity of life on
earth. The exhibit building is placed
in water like an island or a ship, linked to an entrance/exit support
building on the land. Visitors enter by a ramped bridge to an upper level,
where four ocean habitats are seen first above water, under skylights in the
corners. Later, those same four ocean habitats are seen again underwater,
visually linked to a large central tank which represents the unity of all
oceans in a single global ocean. To Print Click Here |
