This project was proposed as a centerpiece of Adriaen’s Landing, a mixed use development in the downtown of Hartford, CT, at the edge of the Connecticut River. The Center was conceived as an expression of the duality of Nature and Man. On the one hand it celebrates the ecology of the Connecticut River and its watershed, and on the other hand it celebrates the Maritime history of Hartford and its connections via the river to the sea. Within a large atrium space to act as a city “living room”, the USS Hartford, a three masted sloop of war, is seen as an artifact and midshipman’s training feature, together with a nuclear submarine, the SSN Hartford, which projects through the building skin to the plaza outside. Located over Interstate 91, drivers traveling south see the ships through a glass wall as they pass underneath. Traveling north, drivers see the terraced natural habitat representing the Connecticut River, as they pass underneath. To Print Click Here |
