The United States Exhibition of Expo ’67 was a collaboration of the
principals of Cambridge Seven Associates, led by Peter Chermayeff, Terry Rankine
and Ivan Chermayeff (responsible for the concept, the exhibition architecture
and the exhibits), with Buckminster Fuller and his colleagues at Fuller Sadao
and Geometrics, Inc. (responsible for the detailed design of the shell). The overall architectural concept was to
offer visitors an extraordinary experience of movement through the dramatic
daylighted space created by a 5/8 spherical
geodesic dome, clad in transparent acrylic panels, allowing dramatic
views inwards and outwards. The
interior architecture was a composition of towers and open exhibit platforms,
connected by escalators, never touching the sphere. The exhibition was a celebration of the creative spirit of
Americans, represented by a wide range of work from NASA’s space exploration
technology to the movies of Hollywood, abstract expressionist painting and
sculpture and a wide diversity of inventions and folk art. To Print Click Here |
