Peter Chermayeff, FAIA, a founding partner
of Chermayeff, Sollogub and Poole, was born in London in 1936. He studied at Phillips
Academy, Andover, Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1957, and
the Harvard Graduate School of Design, receiving a Masters of Architecture
degree in 1962. In 1962 Peter Chermayeff
founded Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc. together with Louis J. Bakanowsky,
Paul Dietrich, Terry Rankine, Alden Christie, Ivan Chermayeff, and Thomas
Geismar. Although proud of that firm’s accomplishments, including the AIA
Firm of the year award in 1983, he decided to resign in 1998 and to found CSP
with two younger partners from C7A, Peter Sollogub and Bobby Poole. Mr. Chermayeff’s design work has included architecture, urban design, exhibition design, graphic design, film production, and management of multi-disciplinary design teams. His work beyond design has included production and installation of exhibits and the formation, in 1990, of a management company, IDEA, specialized in the project management, construction oversight and start-up operations of public aquariums. He has served as IDEA’s president since its founding in 1990. Among his key projects at
Cambridge Seven Associates were prototypes, design guidelines and standards
for the MBTA, Boston’s public transportation system, developed in the 1960’s;
the U.S. Exhibition and Pavilion at EXPO ’67 in Montreal; the San Antonio
Museum of Art in San Antonio, Texas; the Nivola Museum in Orani, Sardinia,
and six public Aquariums. Unbuilt projects included the Irish National
Aquarium, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and proposals for La Ciotat,
France, and Oberhausen, Duesseldorf, Bremerhaven, and Hamburg, in Germany. First of the built
aquariums of which he was Principal in Charge was the New England Aquarium in
Boston, 1969, followed by the National Aquarium in Baltimore, 1981, the Ring
of Fire Aquarium in Osaka, 1990, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, 1992,
the Genoa Aquarium in Genoa, Italy, 1992, and the Oceanário de Lisboa in
Lisbon, Portugal, 1998. At CSP he has played the
leading role in such projects as the Rainforest within the Environmental
Project in Iowa, the Hudson Oceanarium proposal for Pier 40, Manhattan, an
Aquarium in Singapore, the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology
in Taiwan, and a competition submission for the Museum of Science and
Technology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the conceptual design for expansion
of the Berlin Aquarium at the Berlin Zoo. Mr. Chermayeff has taught a studio course at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and served on the Board of Design Consultants of the University of Pennsylvania, the Board of Advisors of Boston University’s School of Visual Arts, and the Visiting Committee of the Rhode Island School of Design. Since 1983, he has been a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 1979 he received the Fuess Award from Phillips Academy, Andover “for distinguished contributions to the public service”.
